What is the 1:1 eyelash extension method?
The 1:1 method of eyelash extension is currently one of the most popular cosmetic treatments for the eyelashes. During the treatment, artificial eyelashes are glued to the natural ones. With extensions, even thin and straight eyelashes can get a desirable curl and a heavy increase in volume.
While there are many methods of eyelash extension, the 1:1 eyelash extensions are the most popular and the easiest to wear. Also called the “classic” method of application, the 1:1 method makes use of a single artificial eyelash for every natural eyelash of your client - hence the name 1:1.

How does the eyelash extension procedure look?
Extending the eyelashes is one of the simplest cosmetic treatments for the eyelashes and requires only basic tools and supplies. The 1:1 extension method is the easiest method of eyelash extension, allowing even beginner stylists to master this technique in no time. The procedure of applying eyelash extension looks as follows:

Step 1 - Protect the eyes
The first and most important step when applying eyelash extensions is to secure the eyes by applying eye pads to the eyelids. Place them close to the base of the lower eyelashes, about 3 or 4 millimetres. -
Step 2 - Choose the extensions
When working with a client, always choose at least three different lengths of eyelash extensions between 6 mm and 14 mm. Keep in mind to avoid using a complete set of the same length, as this may lead to an unnatural look. -
Step 3 - Prepare the lashes
Make your work easier by evenly spacing out the eyelash extensions on a flat surface. To make the application simpler, grab the extensions with tweezers at a 90-degree angle. -
Step 4 - Glue the lashes
Grab an eyelash extension with tweezers and gently dip it in eyelash adhesive. Make sure the bottom of the extension is thoroughly coated in glue, but don’t overdo it - wipe any excess before application. -
Step 5 - Isolate the lashes
Using a pair of straight tweezers, isolate the natural eyelashes. Gently coat them with eyelash adhesive about 0,5 mm to 1 mm from the eyelid. -
Step 6 - Arrange the lashes
After you attach the eyelashes, they should all be turned up and parallel to all the other lashes. Also, make sure no droplets of glue are left on the lashes. Try not to touch them immediately after setting. -
Step 7 - Separate the lashes
Make sure no lashes, artificial or real, are glued together. Use tweezers to separate all the lashes. If you can’t separate two lashes, set them horizontally and use a bit more force - never separate the lashes when holding them vertically. Repeat until you’re happy with the results. -
Step 8 - Dry the lashes
The last step left is to dry the eyelashes. Dry the new extensions at least for a couple of minutes. To improve the effects, you can spray a little distilled water on the eyelashes and dry them again, making sure none of them are glued together.
Is 1:1 method of eyelash extension safe?
Inherently, eyelash extension is a safe treatment which should not damage the health of a client. However, the actual safety of the treatment often depends on the stylist and the supplies they use. Never offer your clients treatments that you are not skilled in. Instead, train on a mannequin or enrol yourself in a training course.
Generally speaking, 1:1 eyelash extensions do not have a negative impact on the natural eyelashes. However, they should not be applied to extremely fragile or thin eyelashes, as they may prove to be too heavy to wear comfortably.
The safety of extensions is directly tied to their quality - at your salon, always use professional eyelash extensions. Never use cheap replacement products - it’s not worth it and the difference in quality will be visible in the final results.

How often do eyelash extensions need re-doing?
The longevity of the treatment depends primarily on the quality of the products used and the skills and experience of the stylist. Usually, the effects of eyelash extension treatment stay visible for about 4 weeks. As the natural life cycle of the eyelashes progresses, the lashes will start to fall off, along with the attached extensions.
Your clients will probably come to visit you again before all of their eyelashes fall off - as more of them are lost, the effects are becoming increasingly uneven. To fix that, it is recommended that clients come again after a couple of weeks for another treatment. To prolong the effects, apply missing lashes where necessary and remove ones which have almost fallen out or those which are too far out now.
How to maintain 1:1 eyelash extensions?
1:1 eyelash extensions do not require much maintenance - in fact, they don’t require almost any special treatment and are very easy for clients to keep up. Just like natural eyelashes, eyelash extensions should be cleaned with a special foam cleaner.
While you can still wear mascara (but only one specially designed to be used with fake lashes) on eyelash extensions, there will be no need to - extensions highly increase the volume and length of the natural eyelashes, also giving them a luscious curvature.
