Volume Eyelash Extensions - 2D, 3D, Hollywood Effect and more

24th Jun 2021

One of the recent achievements in the cosmetic industry are volume lash extensions, which can easily give your clients a dramatic and glamorous look, with much more volume than regular 1:1 eyelash extensions. Luckily, there are many ways to achieve such an effect. Such methods of application as 2D, 3D, and Hollywood Effect can transform even the shortest and thinnest eyelashes into something beautiful without requiring much maintenance from the client.

While some women are born with lush and long natural eyelashes that are full of volume, most are not as lucky. Many women are not content with their natural lashes and make use of eyelash extensions to improve their appearance. While in the past volume eyelash extensions used to be often too heavy for natural eyelashes to hold them, technological innovations in the beauty industry have allowed us to create gorgeous extensions that are lightweight yet durable.

What are 2D, 3D, and 4D eyelash extensions?

Volume methods of extending the eyelashes work by multiplying the number of eyelashes your client has. To each and every single natural eyelash of your client, two or more artificial eyelashes are attached. There are many styles and methods of applying volume eyelash extensions - as a stylist, you should know when to use which, according to your client’s preferences and expected results.

While many think that volume eyelash extensions can only create glamorous, yet unrealistic effects, it isn’t true. Just as classic 1:1 extensions, volume eyelash extensions can be highly customized to create varying results. When applied properly by an experienced stylist, eyelash extensions can create natural and gentle results, but they can also create spectacular and highly visible effects.

The basic types of volume eyelash extensions are 2D, 3D, and 4D, also often called 2:1, 3:1, and 4:1 respectively. As you might have already guessed, these methods of application work by attaching two, three, or four extensions to every single natural eyelash of your client. These artificial eyelashes are manufactured out of lightweight, synthetic materials. The extensions are connected together into bundles light enough not to damage and overburden the natural eyelashes, allowing your clients to enjoy glamorous makeovers that are also comfortable to wear.

Volume eyelash extensions need to be correctly chosen, depending on the shape of your client’s eyes, in order to create a natural and consistent effect. You can customize the number of extensions you’re going to use for each natural lash - the more you use, the more spectacular and highlighted the final effect will be. When applied by a professional stylist, the effects of volume eyelash extension treatment can last between four and eight weeks, depending on the natural life cycle of your client’s eyelashes.

These extensions are not only an easy way to have a glamorous makeover, but can also be a huge time saver. With volume eyelash extensions, your clients won’t have to use mascara and an eye curler, as their eyelashes will always be full of volume and curled exactly like they want.

What is Hollywood Effect and Russian Volume?

One of the most spectacular methods of applying volume eyelash extensions are Hollywood Effect and Russian Volume. Thanks to these two methods, your clients will be able to achieve truly glamorous effects, perfect for parties and even wedding receptions. If your goal is maximum volume, Hollywood Effect and Russian Volume are the way to go.

Similarly to any other volume eyelash extension technique, a bundle of several artificial eyelashes is glued to each natural eyelash. Most stylists use the lightest extensions available for this, as the sheer number of extensions used can create a significant weight which can overburden the eyelashes, making wearing the extensions uncomfortable and even unhealthy for the natural lashes. When done properly, volume extensions offer beautiful, long-lasting effects and quick and painless treatment. They are also perfectly safe for natural eyelashes and do not pose a danger to their health.

When using Hollywood Effect or Russian Volume, the extensions are applied very similarly to other volume methods of application. To attach those lashes, you will need a professional eyelash adhesive - preferably one that does not provoke allergic reactions, as many clients can be overly sensitive towards some of the ingredients of the stronger adhesives.

Before the treatment

To save the stylist’s and the client’s time, it is always recommended that the client does some basic makeup removal at home, even before they begin their treatment. If you’re a stylist, inform your client not to wear mascara and makeup that day, as it will heavily shorten the amount of time required for the preparation. While you will still have to clean your client’s eyes yourself, your work will be much easier without having to struggle with mascara and tough-to-remove makeup.

You should also instruct your clients to come to the treatment fully satiated and well-rested, as the treatment can easily take up to a couple of hours, especially if you’re doing both the upper and the lower lashes. If your client’s eyelashes are especially light, you can dye them with henna before the treatment to make them match the extensions better.

After the treatment

Always instruct your clients to treat their new eyelashes cautiously, especially during the first few days after the treatment. They should avoid heavy humidity, as well as steam. Also, your clients should refrain from using a hairdryer and avoid direct streams of air that can damage the eyelashes. Otherwise, the eyelash adhesive may weaken its bond and the eyelashes may fall off sooner.

Instead of makeup remover, advise your clients to use a delicate micellar cleanser.
